Senior Systems Engineer - IT

The Sherburne County Information Technology Department is seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate to join our team, which consists of 14 Information Technology specialists who focus on business enablement and support of technology. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent collaborative environment that invests in our staff through training and preparation for continued modernization.

The Senior Systems Engineer position exists to design, implement, maintain and train others on the daily support of the County's Server, Microsoft Active Directory, SAN, Backups and Microsoft 365 Cloud Applications. This includes but is not limited to the design, install and documentation of Microsoft Active Directory, SAN, Servers, Exchange and Enterprise Backup and replication.

 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Regular attendance according to the department approved work schedule is required of all Sherburne County positions. Examples of typical duties include but are not limited to the following:


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the County's Server infrastructure components.
    • Responsible for design and structure of the Active Directory, SAN, M365, VMWare Virtualization, Servers, Enterprise backups, and Application Infrastructure for the County
    • Serve as point of audit for external agencies
    • Initiate and create server and application documentation
    • Act as a top tier support escalation point for server and application issues
    • Keep Infrastructure hardware, VMs and applications up to date with patches, OS versions, and hardware replacements
  1. Document and train others in the IT team on maintenance and usage of new and existing infrastructure and enterprise technologies.
    • Initiate and maintain current documentation and diagrams on new and existing Infrastructure and Enterprise technologies
    • Work cooperatively with team to expand and clarify documentation.
    • Ensure IS members are trained in new and existing Infrastructure applications
  1. Research, design, test and recommend new infrastructure technology solutions
    • Partner with vendors to select the proper solutions to provide a secure and stable network
    • Keep up to date on current and future Infrastructure Technology Trends and solutions
    • Build and maintain a test environment for development and testing of new and existing systems and Technologies
    • Work with IT Team Managers and Director to demonstrate new Enterprise Technology solutions that will be cost effective and enhance County users technology experience
  2. Administer and manage various cloud technologies 
    • User federation for various Software as a service solutions
    • Lead the management of the County’s Microsoft cloud deployment
    • Use of scripting languages, such as PowerShell, to maintain the computing environment
    • Responsible for the overall messaging hygiene and encryption, including virus and spam protection and filtering
  3. Security
    • Be knowledgeable and trained on diverse security requirements such as FBI MN BCA, HIPAA, and IRS needs
    • Keep up to date on daily security events and remediation
    • Apply remediation after planned testing
    • Run and review network scans on environment and work with team to remediate
    • Continuously work to improve security both on premise and in the cloud
  4. Other duties as assigned
    • This includes but is not limited to occasional work outside of normal business hours to minimize downtime impact to user base
    • Be part of and help train others in the after hours on-call rotation
    • Attend Meetings, seminars and involvement in committees when assigned
    • Complies with Federal, State, and County rules and regulations
  5. Other responsibilities of the job
    • A high level of analytical skills and application in problem identification, definition, testing and solving in large scale server, SAN and Virtualization in Microsoft environments
    • Able to explain complicated ideas to novice end users 
    •  Advanced knowledge and experience troubleshooting computer and other peripheral hardware problems in the wide and local area network environment
    • Motivated, Self-Starter with excellent organizational and communication skills 
    • Detailed understanding of information technologies and large scale project management
 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Associate's Degree in Computer Science or related field; and
  • 5+ years of work experience in server and system administration in a midsize environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

  • Enterprise data Backup and De-duplication
  • Enterprise Virus Management
  • UPS Design and Wiring in Datacenters
  • Server Hardware
 
The following Certifications are preferred:
  • MCITP or MCP - Microsoft Certified IT Professional
  • MCITP Enterprise messaging
  • Google Certified Cloud Architect

This position is located in Elk River, the Government Center regular business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am -4:30pm, though the IT department provides staff with flexibility in effort to strive for a desired work/life balance.
