Job Summary

Electronically control and observe all access to, from, and inside the jail via computer terminal while guiding staff, law enforcement, professional visits and the public within the facility while maintaining jail safety and security according to facility policies and procedures. Provide the first line of contact for the jail and perform a wide variety of duties in which multiple areas of the facility are managed.

Promptly dispatch corrections staff and transport court security staff to location of alarms and emergency situations.

Provide radio communications and other means of communication to support the operations of the jail and contact other law enforcement agencies as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position.  These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.   Other duties may be required and assigned.
 
Monitor video visiting and the public visitation area.
Troubleshoot problems with the visitation system.
Sort and distribute inmate attorney documents.
Checking in and clearing professional visitors, venders, and volunteers who will be entering the secure jail.
Access and operate multiple database systems.
Type messages and requests to other agencies, receive and respond to messages from other agencies via teletype.
Activate the SCSO CodeRed System in the event of a major emergency.
Log start/end time of jail staff breaks in designated spreadsheet.
Monitor the calling tree and return or forward calls as necessary.
Monitor and observe all inmates and jail staff activity via CCTV.  
Electronically control all doors within the jail, court holding, and secured gates.
Maintain communication between jail with dispatch, maintenance, and court security.
Monitor, detect, and respond to requests/needs for emergency assistance.
Log all keys and radios and personal body alarms used by jail and medical staff, school, pilot outreach.
Monitor weather conditions and provide weather updates to the jail sergeant and inform STS leaders.
Maintain building security log for after-hours personnel.
Report non-compliance of safety or security related policies to Jail Administration.
Maintain continuous monitoring of several alarm systems.
Log all inmate departures and arrivals from work release and STS programs.
Aid and direct inmates via jail intercom.
Maintain and control the warrant process including confirmations and issuing court dates.
Run vehicle, criminal history and person files checks as required.
Monitor inmate phone call program and e messaging services through NCIC.
Arrange transport for inmates awaiting pick-up in other counties.
Receive calls from the public and other law enforcement agencies during and after business hours.
Maintain jail report ledger.
Maintain all fax, radio, telephone, television, computers, and equipment in Master Control and arrange for repairs as required.
Maintain court calendar.
Perform other duties as directed.
Develop and maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships.
Regular and reliable attendance according to the department’s work schedule.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and in accordance with Data Practices Acts.
Ability to work independently and work effectively as a team member and deal with people in an effective and timely manner.
Ability to operate several telephones, radios, and computer terminals simultaneously.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees, the public and users of the communication system.
Ability to remain professional despite the potential for callers to be in distress, angry and overwhelmed.  
Ability to comprehend and follow difficult written and verbal instructions.
Ability to pass a state administered test for certification of a state computer terminal operator’s certification and security awareness training.
Thorough knowledge of Jail Division operations, policies, practices, and procedures.
Ability to multitask.
Ability to type and proficiency in applicable software including Microsoft Office, Outlook and other specialized software packages.
Ability to use equipment including, but not limited to, computers, a variety of alarms and monitors, headsets, phones, ARMER radios, fax machine, keys, printer/copier/scanner, and intercom.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma and two years of work experience in a call center or other similar customer service-related work.  

Licenses or certifications required for the position: CJIS Terminal Operator Certification, but can be obtained after hire – CPR certification, can also be obtained after hire.  

Excellent typing skills, computer proficiency, superior audio and visual capabilities, and multi-tasking capabilities are required.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This is a 24/7 operation with shifts bid by seniority. Must be available for mandated OT and Holidays along with turnaround and be flexible for non-fixed shift assignments or off-duty call. Workers in this class mainly work in a secure control room inside the jail but will also have direct contact with inmates throughout the jail.
Must be comfortable working in a jail environment while having direct contact with inmates and visitors.
