Nutrition Educators provide professional assessment of the nutritional status of WIC applicants, determine eligibility, and provide nutritional counseling of WIC participants.

This position is located at the Government Center in Elk River, MN. Our regular business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, though the department provides staff with flexibility in effort to strive for a desired work/life balance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required for all positions. 

  • Screen applicants for WIC program eligibility.
  • Collect and evaluate client health information, nutritional intake, anthropometric and hematological data.
  • Determine WIC eligibility, collect and maintain client data, respond to client questions.
  • Provide nutrition education and counseling to WIC participants at the appropriate learning level, develop care plans for at-risk WIC participants.
  • Issue WIC benefits and schedule appropriate appointments for participants. Explain procedures for redeeming WIC benefits and other WIC regulations necessary for participants.
  • Refer participants to community services, medical and social service agencies, where appropriate.
  • Apply Continuous Quality Improvement concepts.
  • Support mobile or community WIC and outreach sites.
  • Support public health emergency preparedness duties, as needed.
  • Attend staff training and meetings and other opportunities to work on special projects,  as assigned by the WIC Supervisor. 
  • Disseminate information learned at trainings/meetings and share resources. 
  • General administrative assistance in answering phone/walk-ins, as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education: Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, or related field such as Food and Nutrition, Home Economics (with required coursework), or a Health field (with required coursework).

Experience: Minimum of 1 year of related experience.

Must have a valid Minnesota Driver's license.

Preferred:

  • Experience with working directly with families
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Work-related experience in WIC
  • Experience as a Registered Dietitian or Licensed Dietitian
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Lactation Training
  • CPR certification
  • Bilingual

Hiring Salary Range: $27.97  – $33.56/hour

Hours of Work:
This position has a usual work schedule of 40 hours per week within the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; with hybrid opportunity. Position will include some evening and weekend hours to meet with clients and for events, such as late clinic one evening per month. 


Typical Working Environment:
95% inside work environment.   5% outside work.  (15% travel required).
 
Hazards include: office chemicals, blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, and potential for bioterrorism.
 
Ability to take after-hours on-call, work longer shifts, nights, and weekends to meet operational needs.

Work performed in the community is sometimes subject to conditions that range from inclement weather to dangerous conditions such as snow/ice, cold, heat, noise, wetness/humidity, vibration, sudden temperature changes, and poor illumination at the job site or due to travel on the job. Travel to and from field locations may subject worker to increased risk of driving hazards. Community locations may subject worker to communicable diseases, insects and other disease vectors, toxins, second hand smoke, hazardous materials, chemicals and animals.
 
In all settings, members of the public who exhibit challenging, atypical or hostile behaviors and/or communication.
 
Typical Physical Requirements for this Position:
  • Hand/eye coordination. 
  • Ability to lift 20-30 pounds.
  • Engage in the following movements: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling and writing and repetitive motions. 
  • Exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. 
  • Hearing ability sufficient enough to communicate with others effectively in person and over the phone 
  • Visual ability must be sufficient enough to read typewritten documents, computer screen and drive a car.
